Davis supports his thoughts on the subject by giving evidence. The author cited the works of researchers in order to provide the evidence needed to support his points. The intended audience of the essay are college students.             I agree with Davis’ point that going to college does mean becoming someone new because there are certain aspects of yourself that you must change to fit into a college environment. I related to the author when he says that what was expected of him in high school was m...

Shevantai Gooden, Amir Arnold and Andreana Clark Dr. Cantice Greene English 1101 14 March 2022 Rhetorical Reading Response on “How I Learned to Read and Write” In the autobiographical essay “How I Learned to Read and Write,” (1845) written by Frederick Douglas, Douglas describes his journey in learning to read and write. Douglas illustrates the many obstacles and difficulties he had to overcome when learning to read and write. The author develops his story by providing evidence and giving descriptions of how he learned to read and write. The author uses quotations in the story to give evidence of what others have said to him. Douglas’s intended audience for this essay were slaveholders and other people interested in learning about his journey in becoming a literate slave. After reading the essay, I felt sympathy for Douglas and other slaves who were deprived of literacy and their freedom. I also felt hatred for the slaveholders who stole these slaves from their mother...

Shevantai Gooden, Amir Arnold and Adreana Clarke Dr. Cantice Greene English 1101 13 February 2022 Rhetorical Reading Response (Context)      In the personal narrative “Context” (1994) by Dorothy Allison, the author explores the use of the English Language in different contexts. Allison shows that there are different contexts of speaking by giving evidence from her personal life. The author supports her thesis by giving quotes from the people who spoke around her. The author provides these quotes in order to convince her readers of the point she is bringing forth. The intended audience of this narrative is a general audience.      I felt a feeling of comfort after reading this essay. My reason for feeling this way is because I can relate to her feeling of uncertainty when introducing important persons in her life to each other. When preparing to introduce her lover to her family, the uncertainty came from not knowing what to expect from ei...

AnzaldĂșa portrays this oppression by giving examples of personal experiences when people made situations difficult for her or looked down on her because of the language she spoke. The author includes quotes throughout the essay in order to provoke the thoughts of readers. The intended audience of the essay are Chicanos and people who have caused Chicanos to feel oppressed.             I felt sympathetic and inspired after reading the essay. I sympathize with the author and other Chicanos because I feel their pain of being rejected...

Shevantai Gooden, Amir Arnold and Andreana Clark Dr. Cantice Greene English 1101 2 February 2022 Rhetorical Reading Response- “Talking in Color: Collision of Cultures” In the blog “Talking in Color: Collision of Cultures” (2013) by Tiffany Hendrickson, Hendrickson describes how people have perceived her as being black based on the sound of her voice. Hendrickson provided proof of this misconception by giving her audience examples of instances where individuals have told her that they thought that she was a black girl after hearing her speak. Hendrickson contrasts her views of color versus her views of sound in order to give her readers reasons why it is so unusual that individuals are comparing her voice to the color of her skin. The intended audience of this blog are persons who have experienced racism/judgement and people who are racist/judgmental. I am baffled after reading this blog because it is so surprising to me that people are so creative in finding ways to...
